Description
A 1 oz gold Britannia coin. The coin was first introduced by the Royal Mint in 1987. Each 1 oz gold coin has a face value of £100. Initially the Britannia was manufactured in 22 carat gold. Since 2012, the Britannia became a fine gold coin produced in 24 carat.
The front of the coin features an image of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the King George IV State Diadem. This is the crown that is typically worn for the annual State Opening of Parliament.
The reverse features an image of Lady Britannia. She is holding an olive branch and a shield in one hand, and a trident in the other. The reverse of the coin also portrays the year of minting.
For UK-based private investors the Britannia is both Capital Gains Tax free (CGT exempt) and VAT free.
